Google Groups subscription failure

I wanted to contribute a patch to the Prosody XMPP server. The contributor documentation asks people to subscribe to the prosody-dev mailing list, which I can subscribe to by sending an e-mail to prosody-dev+subscribe@googlegroups.com.

A few seconds later I get an e-mail back with instructions to reply to that mail to confirm the subscription:

Subject: Join request for prosody-dev [{EIuU4MwGB_Ujs-pja9E0}]

Hello user@example.org,

We received your request to join prosody-dev. In order for us to complete the request, please reply to this email or visit the following confirmation URL:

https://groups.google.com/group/prosody-dev/subscribe

If you have questions related to this or any other Google Group, visit the Help Center at https://groups.google.com/support/.

Thanks,
Google Groups

When doing that, I get a failure:

** Message not delivered **

There was a problem delivering your message to prosody-dev+subconfirm@googlegroups.com. See the technical details below.

The response was:

Unable to subscribe to group.

That's it. I can't subscribe to the group, nobody knows why, and nobody can solve this problem.

Even the Prosody developers don't know what is happening here; they only know that it's getting harder and harder to subscribe.

As always with Google, there is nobody to contact. On the other side of dystopia, spammers are able to subscribe me to their spam lists without asking me.
